Professor Patrick Yeni was appointed President of the French National AIDS Council (CNS) by presidential decree on 27 April 2012. As the fifth president of the council, he succeeds Françoise Héritier, Alain Sobel, Jean-Albert Gastaut and Willy Rozenbaum.
A professor in immunology and head of the Infectious Diseases Department at the Paris Nord Val de Seine Grouping of University Hospitals (HUPNVS), since 2006 Patrick Yeni has led the expert group on medical care for people living with HIV.
Patrick Yeni is the initiator or coordinator of numerous national and international therapeutic trials, is a member of the French National Agency for AIDS and Viral Hepatitis Research’s Coordinated Initiative 5 and also leads the ESTHER project in Luang Prabang (Laos).
He is replacing Professor Willy Rozenbaum, who was president of the CNS from 2003 to 2012, and is the co-discoverer of HIV/AIDS, professor of infectious diseases at the Pierre and Marie Curie University, and a physician at the Saint-Louis Hospital in Paris.
Under his leadership, the CNS focused on strengthening rights, particularly those of people living with HIV, and was actively involved in defining the new challenges of HIV/AIDS control at national and international level.
A second decree issued on 27 April 2012 also announced the appointment of two new council members:
Delphine Horvilleur, Liberal Jewish Movement in France (MJLF) rabbi and journalist, appointed by the President of France.
Jean-Pierre Couteron, a clinical psychologist and president of theFédération Addiction, appointed by the Prime Minister upon recommendation of the minister for health.
